The Department of Human-Machine Systems Engineering takes an interdisciplinary approach to researching and teaching the user-oriented design of effective and efficient human-machine systems. The aim is to optimize the interaction between humans and technical devices and systems.
The research area is methodologically a mixture of cognitive and occupational science, ergonomics, systems engineering as well as software and information technology. Depending on requirements, engineers from various disciplines, computer scientists, psychologists and designers work together in application-oriented research, development and consulting projects. Typical fields of application are technical systems such as aircraft, vehicles, robots, power plants, production facilities, telematics and information management systems.

The Department of Metallic Materials deals with the relationships between the structural composition and properties of metallic and inorganic non-metallic materials in teaching and research. Naturally, this includes a large number of fundamental aspects that are also important for other classes of materials. Fundamental questions are just as important as practical and technological issues. The department is a member of the scientific working group of the Professors of Materials Engineering e. V., an association of university professors of materials engineering with the aim of promoting teaching and research in this field. Scientific services for industrial partners are provided by the ZerTech working group (www.zertech.de).

The Department of Fluid Mechanics is integrated into the Institute of Mechanics in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Kassel and deals with motion processes in liquids and gases. On the basis of conservation laws for mass, momentum, swirl and energy, flow processes are analyzed for technically relevant applications in mechanical and process engineering in order to be able to measure and calculate them.
In research, the focus is on the modeling of flow processes and their numerical implementation as well as experimental validation with special consideration of applications. The focus is on transport processes in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering and process engineering equipment.

The Department of Engineering Mechanics / Continuum Mechanics is part of the Institute of Mechanics in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In addition to basic research in various areas of solid mechanics, industry-oriented contract research is carried out. Engineering services and contract developments are carried out as part of industrial projects. Important cooperation partners include Mercedes Benz, Volkswagen and Airbus.
In addition to test benches for analyzing the fatigue strength of large components such as truck axles, servo-hydraulic testing machines are available for static and (highly) dynamic tests, some with multi-axis (tensile-torsional) loading. A drop test rig enables impact speeds of up to 40 km/h. A stereo high-speed image correlation system (775,000 images/sec) is available for analysis purposes.

The Department of Separating and Joining Manufacturing Processes (tff) is part of the Institute of Production Engineering and Logistics at the University of Kassel.
Teaching and research focus on cutting and joining manufacturing processes. The core competencies of the department are reflected in the three departments of welding technology, adhesive bonding technology and machining technology.
As North Hesse is characterized by industrial production in the fields of transportation and energy technology, these are the focus of applications alongside mechatronics and microsystems. For these areas, cutting and joining manufacturing processes are (further) developed as part of both basic and application-oriented research and development work in the tff department.
